An empire you build square by square
Open World Chess joins two things: a world-building strategy game where you settle land, gather resources and grow towns, and the game of chess, which decides every fight. Real players and AI empires share one world that never ends.
One endless, shared world
Every square of the map is a square of a chessboard: forests, rivers, deserts, frozen lands and mountains, all on one grid shared by every player. Your pieces walk it in character: knights hop in L-shapes, pawns trudge, and the rooks are war elephants that knock down trees to clear a road.
- Kings hold land; buildings only work near a king
- Gather wood, stone, crops and ore
- The land itself has a rating: richer land has stronger neighbours

Every battle is a real game of chess
When armies meet, the fight is played as a game of chess with a clock, using exactly the pieces you brought. Win a siege and the town's buildings are yours. Lose your Emperor, your elite king, and your empire scatters.
- Full chess rules, en passant included
- Promotion is temporary: a promoted pawn fights as a queen for that one battle
- Beat an Emperor and seize a crown of your own

Build cities by hand
Houses make pawns, stables make knights, temples make bishops, barracks make war elephants, and palaces make kings and queens. Then draw your city: streets and squares, bridges over rivers, walls and gates, gardens, hedges and lamps. Pieces live in it: they work by day, go home at night and make pilgrimages to altars.

Armies, the wilds and a campaign
Group your pieces into troops and send them across the world to guard, gather or attack. Beyond the empires live 32 factions of creature camps, from goblins to a Dragon Brood, guarding hoards and relics. The Chronicle is a 15-chapter campaign that takes you from Settler to High King, a chapter at a time.

FAQ
What is Open World Chess?
Open World Chess is a free multiplayer strategy game played in the web browser on phone and desktop. The whole world is one endless, shared chessboard: players build an empire, raise an army of chess pieces, and win land from other players and monster camps, and every battle is a real game of chess with a clock.
Is it free?
Yes. Open World Chess is free to play in any modern browser on phone, tablet or desktop. There's nothing to download.
Do I need an account?
No. You can play straight away as a guest by choosing a name. Signing in with Google or TikTok is optional; it saves your empire so you can continue on another device.
What does Sign in with TikTok do?
It signs you in using your TikTok display name and avatar, and, only when you choose to, lets you post a replay clip of one of your chess battles to your TikTok account or drafts. You pick who can see each post and can disconnect TikTok at any time from Settings. See our Privacy Policy for details.
Do I need to be good at chess?
No. Wild camps range from small bands to dragons, so you choose your fights, and the campaign guides you as you go. Strong players will find stronger neighbours in richer land.
How do battles work?
When armies meet, the fight is a real game of chess with a clock. Each side plays with exactly the pieces it brought (at most one legal chess set). Win a siege and the town's buildings are yours; checkmate an Emperor and you seize a crown. The full rules are in the guide.
Is it pay-to-win?
No. The only purchases are cosmetic civilization styles (Dravidian, Roman, Chinese, Egyptian) bought with Crowns. They change how your pieces and buildings look, never how they play.
Can I play on my phone?
Yes. The game runs in the browser on phones, tablets and computers, with controls made for each. You can also add it to your home screen.
Who makes it?
Open World Chess is an independent game made by a solo developer. The code is open source on GitHub, and the community lives on Discord. Contact: openworldchessgame@gmail.com.
